That Shameful Moment When The Hood Shows No Love (RIP to Doe B)

Just when he was going to make some waves....

Just when he was going to make some waves….

From my experiences, Montgomery, Alabama has been one of the most self-appreciative cities I have known. To put it bluntly, Montgomery loves Montgomery. From their witty southern vernacular to their popular local hang-outs, “The Gump” always seemed like a world within itself. Montgomery isn’t just a college town; it is a town filled with hoods and professionals alike. In short, Montgomery is, and always has been, a color city filled with characters that oozed hometown pride.

Yet, things have become more peculiar as time has gone by. And the next situation has caused a lot of inner confusion.

Earlier today (December 28, 2013), rapper Doe B and Kimberly Johnson were murdered at the Rose Supper Club. Details tend to be sketchy at the moment (for me anyways). However, at some point there must have been a gun inside of the club. At some point, this gun was drawn to kill two people that were loved and revered by their respective communities. So, it seems that two people were murdered in a situation that should have LEGALLY never happened.

Then it hit me: none of the victims were over the age of 22.

From that point, there was an outpour of love, condolences and confusion.

Even more confusing is this one tweet giving the mentality of those that can consider themselves to be “have nots”:

For me, this entire situation has me confused as ever. I am trying to figure out when did Montgomery become a place riddled with barrel crabs? My stint in Montgomery had it where people that were doing good were celebrated. If it wasn’t for the strong local support, I would have known nothing of Dirty, Deuce Komradz, Doe B, and many other dope local artists that could have blown up at any time. Yet, I am still confused as to when the love became hate.

Or maybe I was wrong the entire time. I don’t know. I need someone to help me out.

Kimberly Johnson2

What is even more ridiculous is that these TWO people (that weren’t even in their mid-twenties) died over some foolishness when they should have been celebrating. Kimberly Johnson just had her birthday a couple of days prior; Doe B was set to do some things on Grand Hustle. I find it crazy that someone found a way to GET a gun inside of The Rose. Then again, from people’s reactions, I’m starting to notice that this behavior has become common. Still, if you bring a gun to THE CLUB, common sense would tell you that maybe you shouldn’t be there?

That is unless you planned on causing some trouble in the first place.

In short, we have to realize when we have become our own worst enemy. It is unsettling when a city known for “hometown pride” is shaken up by situations of “hometown hate”. For anything, the entire city should have been ride or die for someone like Doe B. Yet, there were the haters lurking everywhere to cause mass chaos. Now, Doe B and Kimberly Johnson won’t even begin to realize their full potential in a world that was practically set to be theirs.

R.I.P. to both of these young people. And prayers to those that lost their loved ones because humans forgot that they weren’t colored red with claws.

The hate has to cease; it has to be either love or nothing.

UPDATE!!!! UPDATE!!!!

1.) There has also been more deaths and injuries associated with what occurred.

2.) There is a petition going around for the closing of The Rose Supper Club. I loved The Rose. I have fond memories of that place. But, something has to be done. This is one step in the right direction. After this, we need to hit the hood and start re-establishing some commercial/economic and morale ground.

Press the link here to sign the petition.
