Even snowmen cry snowflake tears.

There are many of us that just cannot get into the holidays. Maybe it is the pain of losing a loved one (I know how you feel). Or maybe it is the fact that the holidays have become too much of a monetary minstrel show. Whatever the case may be, some of us out there despise these times. Days of family and celebration are much more synonymous with loneliness, bitterness, and unhappiness with them. Thus, making it through this time of year becomes a serious task.

This isn’t just a simple observance, either. This has been documented by many of survey or study made by professionals that have higher educational degrees than I have. So, I am not talking out of the side of my neck. This is a serious occurrence. In short, there are those of us that need help to make it through this time period.

I have a few suggestions that can help. I may not be an expert, but I do know a “thing or two about a thing or two”. Take heed to the words that I say. As my former Arby’s manager Tony Gladney would say: “I won’t do you wrong”.

1.)    Be around family: Make sure you are around the people that care about you the most. What do you think is better: sitting around moping or actually taking the time to fill your life with positive vibes? That is, unless your family is actually a bigger burden than poverty on the middle and lower class in America. Then, by all means, don’t be around them.

2.)    If you don’t have a family, then make one: Sounds crazy, right? Well, hell, what do you have to lose? People keep forgetting that they don’t live within a vacuum. We are human beings. As humans, we crave bonding and community (for the most part). Many of us struggle during these times because we feel alone. The best way to not feel alone is to NOT BE ALONE. Find a family to be around. Gain some of that positive energy. Laugh at their “family foolishness”. Trust me: it will make the world of difference.

3.)    Realize the reasons you live: What are your goals? What gets you up in the morning? If those questions don’t actually makes sense or the answers sound like something you would get from Kelly Bundy on Married with Children, then you need to adjust your life. Figure out what your life is going to be about. Many people’s lives are unfulfilling because they have no true goals or they feel their lives serve no purpose. In this life of ours, purpose is everything.

4.)    Be a blessing to others: This is the season of struggle. In this land of big dreams, bigger losses, and heavy handed materialism, there are those less fortunate. If you aren’t less fortunate, then help those that are. Be the light at the end of the tunnel that isn’t a train. Be the warmth that isn’t a fire burning down a house. Be the positive that isn’t the result of an HIV test. In short, be good to somebody regardless of if they know you. Optimistic energy is always a great thing to offer. Optimistic action can take life even further.

5.)    If need be, get religious with it: if you realize that this is a pagan holiday then ignore this one. However, if you are blessed by the birth of sweet Chocolate Baby Jesus, then he should be the reason for the season. That alone just may help you get through the holiday season. Go to a church (if one is open). Spread some religious love. Use parts of this to help you do number 4 (which is right above).

Holidays may be tough, but they don’t have to be. Taking a more proactive approach to either being around people, or DOING FOR people, can help you get through these “rough times”. Rest assured: this holiday is not about you; it is about what you can do for others. So, if you have a little light left in you, then make it shine like the grill on Trinidad James.
